AmeliaHd2Amelia’s Choice: The Axel Project

Nearly two years ago, I joined an entourage of moms holding their children close as I watched, heart broken, while Jen and Randy Charrette went through the unimaginable pain of losing their 2-year-old son to a senseless act of murder while traveling in Mexico. I would be lying if I didn’t say that it threw me for an awful loop. That is something no parent should ever have to go through, and most parents never dream of having to deal with. There is nothing in life that could ever prepare you for that.

I spent a lot of time thinking about what I would do, how I would handle it. I was trying to put myself in their shoes while also making every excuse in my mind I could as to why that could ever, WOULD never happen to me. I hit a lot of walls in my thinking.

However, what Jen and Randy did do is far more commendable than I can hope to give them credit for. They took their pain and anguish, their questions and seeking, and their energy and turned it into a beautiful tribute. Born out of their family passion for biking, and the fact that, even at 2 years old, Axel loved riding more than anything else, the Axel Project works to get kids on bikes that couldn’t regularly afford them. Their philosophy parallels mine – that biking brings a wide range of benefits to kids, including balance, confidence, freedom and joy for living an active, outdoor life. And that it starts young – with balance bikes – so that even children aged 18 months can be learning to ride.

In a society where such importance is put on screens and technology and not enough on nature and learning and being active, I couldn’t think of a better gift to give a young child. I invite you to learn the Charrette’s story, to get to know Axel just a bit, and help get some kids on bikes.

Axel Project was created in honor of our son Axel who was killed in February 2013. Axel Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the fundamental principle that a productive, happy life begins with bikes. Our mission is to introduce and nurture a lifelong passion for cycling to children and their families. While our goal is broad, our first project is aimed at providing balance bicycles and instruction to Schools and children in need, ages 18 months to 5-years of age, to teach the basic skills necessary to get them riding on two wheels—with their friends, their family and forever.
