BonBon Break

First Days in Rwanda

~:: Judy Chovan ::~

A quick update on my first few days in Gashora, Rwanda. Gashora is a village about 35 km south of the capital city, Kigali, Rwanda – about a one-hour drive. The main road is paved as are most of the main roads in Rwanda, and it’s not until we turn off for the village that the road becomes the more ubiquitous red clay, dusty road of sub-Saharan Africa. Gashora is located in the south central part of the country eight kilometers north of the border with Burundi. The region is not as hilly, the land not as fertile, and the climate a bit hotter and drier than the rest of the country. These factors contribute to a poorer and less dense population.

ABOUT JUDY: Judy is an avid traveller. She is passionate about learning about the world we share and the people with whom we share it. She studied both art history and marine biology in graduate school and spent most of her career working in museums, the last few years as a museum director. She and her husband, Bob Stavers live on San Juan Island and love to hike, bike, kayak, ski, and do just about anything adventurous out of doors. She is off next to Iran and is hoping everyone keeps their fingers off the button.

How do you know when you’ve entered middle age? Do we fight it or just roll with it? We’ve all heard of the mid-life crisis many men seemingly experience. The guys get shiny new sports cars but what’s in it for us? Oh, that’s right. We get the sagging breasts.

I’m not sure where middle age begins or even where it ends but I thought it might be fun to share several indicators that lead me to believe I’m knocking on that door…

MBA Turned Mom {Shock}

 ~:: Carrots Are Orange ::~

I never thought I’d be a stay at home mother. No judgement. To each his or her own. I grew up in a single parent home where self sufficiency was key, even if my mother didn’t realize that was the message. That message was certainly not a bad one, just one, after a decade in the finance industry and a professionally driven mindset stemming from a lifetime of never thinking even ONCE that I wouldn’t go to a job every day, that made the transition to “stay at home motherhood” a complex one.

ABOUT MARNIE:
Marnie writes Carrots Are Orange, a blog she started in 2010 after the birth of her first son. She hails from Maine, a wonderfully down to earth place to grow up. Marnie moved to the west coast in 1999, currently living in Seattle with her husband and two young boys. She is pursuing Montessori certification. Marnie can be found on Facebook , TwitterPinterest, and Google +.

Negativity? That’s for the Birds

 ~:: Hippy Fit Mom ::~

Have a piece of cake, it is really good! I swear I hear that at every social event. Sweetly declining “the best cake ever” or “the most delectable pie in the world”, has become a great art form for me. In life and our road to optimum health, we get to a point where people in our lives and even events/holidays can hold us back from reaching our fitness potential. We all have people in our lives where exercise and health are not even in his or her vocabulary. Whether it is nasty words or sabotaging our goals, they can be road blocks on the journey to reaching our fitness goals. Don’t let them be! I see it so much amongst women. Don’t let negativity get in your way. Let us be supportive of one another and say….”Negativity…..That’s For the Birds!”
