Weekly Bites: Getting Dirty
“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.”
~Alfred Austin
Alfred gets me.
I miss being dirty. I miss my kids being dirty. I find myself longing for bare feet and finger nails with earthy brown crescents.
My kids are becoming masters at independent indoor play, but thanks to this long winter, I am starting to feel disconnected from the outdoors. I know we can get outside during inclement weather, but I yearn for doors left open and greenery in my garden. I long to touch warm sand, cool water and soft, tender leaves.
Like a bear who is about to awaken from a deep slumber, I am feeling the need to shake off winter and get dirty.
I am dreaming of day trips to the beach, the garden, the lake, the parks with hair flung back and sunglasses on, discovering with curious little eyes and inquisitive fingers by my side. It’s my other half and it seems like my kids don’t know that part of me right now.
So Alfred, we are almost there. Soon it will be time to get dirty and feed our souls with dirt and sun and nature again.
Until then,
