GETTING MY CARD REVOKED ::: Chica and the City

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to hold on to my culture card for dear life as someone tried to rip it out of my hands. Nope, “You’re not Puerto Rican enough!” they’d say. Say what? But, but, but I’ve taken all of the online, “You know you’re Puerto Rican if…” tests, and passed them all with loud and vibrant colors! Yes, I do point at things with my lips. Yes, I do say, “Bring me la cosa, no next to el deso. Ay, no la otra cosa!” Yes, I have at least four relatives with beaded curtains, and yes I grew up thinking my name was “Mira”. EXPOSED: ONE YEAR LATER ::: Just Roni

I grew up a typical body hating yo-yo dieter. In my teens and 20’s I hid my body in big oversized jeans and wouldn’t be caught dead in a bathing suit. After years of punishing myself for not being “perfect” enough I’ve finally come to the conclusion that my body is what it’s alway been and there’s nothing wrong with that. Join me for a trip down my body’s memory lane where I expose myself and all the wonderful things my body has done for me in the past as well as the future.

BEAUTY SCHOOL DROP OUT ::: Cynical Mother

With age comes clarity. You learn to appreciate family and friends. Things that you obsessed over pale in comparison to actual problems. Unfortunately, with each new year comes wrinkles and age spots. I’m not incredibly vain, but I don’t want to look like a Golden Girl. However, a trip to the cosmetics store isn’t easy. Especially when a young 20-something is dishing out advice.
