Birdwatching! What a sweet, simple pastime. My family had bird feeders when I was little, but that feels like a long time ago. And now that my hubby and I have a yard (the very same yard I grew up in), we put one up and I remember now what a truly awe-filled experience backyard birdwatching is. So invite those wild birds into your yard space and prepare to be totally captivated by this up-close experience and the heartwarming antics of an ever-changing variety of species.

ABOUT LINDSEY: Lindsey blogs at Herban Gardener and believes that homesteading is, foremost, a mindset — independent of location or living situation. She and her hubby live in an ordinary urban neighborhood in sunny Colorado where they garden organically, hang clothes out to dry, brew kombucha, make sauerkraut, forage the back-alleys of the city, maintain a no-car household, and strive each day for simplicity and contentment.

When Chickens Rebel

 ~:: A Nest for All Seasons ::~

For the best of times and the worst of times, chickens are an essential part of our home. You see, in the best of times they are the most pastoral of pastoral subjects, clicking their toes and clucking their throats as they waddle their two-legged run across the back yard. In the worst of times they provide the quintessential perfect food to sustain us; the incredible, edible egg. It is such a small thing, but that fragile, life-giving egg means we can survive almost anything. It is security every single morning that if we have nothing else in the fridge — we can still have eggs. Of course, all of that security flies right out the window when your chickens rebel against you…

ABOUT AMY: Amy Renea is a freelance writer, designer and editorial photographer, based in Hershey, PA. When Amy isn’t blogging, she’s chasing around three little boys and eight crazy chickens in the backyard. When she gives up the chase, you’ll find her sipping on dandelion tea on the back porch.
