I often wonder if they come to regret their decision when they see how much more difficult things are, not only for the child or the parents, but for the other passengers around them.

Valid reasons are always acceptable, but "I was here first and I don't want to sit next to a stranger" are arguments I expect people to grow out of by the time they're adults! On the other hand, in this case at least one of you was sitting with her so that's not too bad. (In our case the kids, 3 and 6, were expected to sit alone.)

Anyway, rant over 🙂 . Good advice!
