Yes, lots to worry about, as always! I’m a big baseball fan, and the thought of an accidental bat to the head or a line drive to the face makes me nauseous.

Right – and I completely get that your kids can’t live in a bubble and there is serious risk in any sport. I’ve heard that side from some people. But it’s sort of a false comparison, because that truth–that there is some risk in everything–doesn’t mean we should allow everything, right? We can still have some control over what we perceive to be the riskiest.

Me, too. It’s a huge industry. Lots of people and cities making lots of money.

Thanks so much, and good points. We can help, and I’m so glad to hear that the NFL is working with mothers like the one you know. I hope, and I know this is the cynic in me, that the NFL is sincere in their public efforts to make the sport safer.

Was just thinking the same thing the other day… glad my area schools don’t have rugby. I know every sport has risk, but at least we can have some control.

We told our son early on that he could only play flag-football. He decided he wanted to take a flag-football class to learn the rules but quickly realized that if he wasn’t going to be allowed to play tackle football, there was little sense in continuing on. I do worry about soccer and other seemingly “safer” sports though too.

All I had to do was take a look at the helmet and see the warning that despite safety devices, it’s a dangerous sport and kids could still be injured–or die (or some words to that extent). Considering the potential (and probable) injuries, I can’t see it any other way, and it’s pretty sad that it’s an acceptable activity for anyone–at any age. But, then again, money talks.

I’m from Texas where football is king. I will let my son play if he wants, but I will not push him to do as I once thought I would. Not because of safety, but because I want my children to be who they want to be. But that’s not what I’m torn about. It is because I think mothers like you are the ones that can help make the sport safer. I know a mom who is on a committee with the NFL that is working to make the sport safer. To make money you have to protect your assets, and these players are their assets. I do believe that they are doing everything they can to make the sport safer now and into the future. I think that starts by teaching the younger players what it means to be safe. Parents with a cautious spirit such as yours could only add value to the game.
