At 14, my son asked me if there was anything about him that would make me NOT love him. I told him…nothing! It was then that he announced that he thought he was gay. I said, "so what?" At just shy of 30, he has a wonder partner, fantastic job, and is the kindest human being you would ever want to meet. (not that I'm biased or anything!) We've come a long way, but there is still ground to cover. Getting these types of conversations into the hands of parents of young children is what it takes. Thank you!

Thanks, Kerstin! He’s getting to the age where dialogue works better than lecture, but I’m wound pretty tightly about what we say to other humans about the immutable parts of themselves. Misogyny and racism and ignorance of all stripes are gonna just be beaten down in my house. Childhood will be a bit too serious, maybe, but I think they’ll be okay as adults. A lot of play, a lot of love, and a lot of lectures. [shrug] It’s the professor in me. 😉

Oh, Susan, thank you! I’m usually quite good at over their heads and overtalking and mountains out of molehills. Luckily, I had a couple hours to ponder before I overreacted and I tried really hard to take a deep breath before I blurted.

Thank you, Alison! I though we’d had a jump on it because we talk about families looking all different ways and believing different things, but I forgot the part where teasing should involve knowing that the hell you’re talking about. 😉

I hope I have such grace if and when that situation comes up with my son.

I take my job to raise a child who makes the world a better place very seriously, too – and if we want to raise respectful citizens, we have to treat our kids with respect – this is an amazing example of just that.

I wish I could articulate what I'm thinking when it comes to talking to my little guys about important issues. Surely there's a class for that somewhere?!

It’s amazing which words kids associate something “teaseworthy” with, without even knowing the real meaning. I think nurture and lecture is a good combination.
