I have been wanting to make something like this to hang up in my kitchen for a long time! I don’t know why…but I can never remember how many teaspoons in a tablespoon and how many tablespoons in a cup, etc.

Yesterday I was working on a cooking post that required me to make several changes to the recipe amounts. I kept having to go to my phone and double-check on the measurements. I became so annoyed by the situation that last night I decided if I was ever going to make it through the holiday cooking and baking season with my insanity intact then I’d better come up with something helpful I could hang in my kitchen.

What happens when you fight with a loved one and you’re at an impasse? Who makes the first move? How do extend the proverbial olive branch to mend the rift? I appreciate this post so much by Jillee, she gives excellent advice that we can all use. ~Rebecca

In my heart of hearts and in my rational mind, I knew that our spat wouldn’t last forever, I knew I personally couldn’t hold a grudge that long, BUT I definitely wasn’t going to let go of it anytime soon! Ironically, the harder I tried to hold onto it, the more miserable I became. One of my favorite quotes is: “Holding a grudge is like drinking the poison and expecting the other person to die.” It’s so true! We hope the other person is suffering like we are and expect them to know how much they have hurt us and make amends. But that doesn’t always happen, and before you know it, weeks, months, even years pass and we continue to hold onto our grudges like a security blanket. Unfortunately, that blanket doesn’t bring us any comfort or security at all. Ultimately, forgiveness, compromise and acceptance are the only things that can soothe feelings and fix relationships. So how can we mend fences with family (or friends) when it seems like such an insurmountable task?

6 Common Food Additives to Avoid by One Good Thing by Jillee

I’d like to first state that I truly do believe that we owe a lot to science when it comes to the preservation and flavor enhancements of our food. But some of the advancements in food science, in the name of “progress”, can actually end up hurting us. I’ll be the first to admit that I occasionally rely on the convenience of packaged foods and don’t plan on drastically changing that, but I am talking about repeated reliance on processed, pre-packaged foods that can lead to an overexposure to unnatural and unnecessary chemicals.

TURN A MASON JAR INTO AN EASY DIY DISPENSER

Mason Jar Crafts and More from One Good Thing by Jillee mason jar dispenser

From the Simply Brilliant and Brilliantly Simple file…today’s post is short, but SWEET! I can’t believe I never thought to do something like this before. With as many mason jars as I use in my day-to-day life, being able to convert them into a dispenser of sorts is so helpful!

I first spied an idea similar to this on Pinterest, except it involved using the top of a salt container. Then I spied THIS idea and decided it just looked way too easy not to try.

Mason Jar Crafts and More from One Good Thing by Jillee mason jar dispenser

All you need is:

  • an empty juice carton
  • a mason jar
  • a mason jar ring
  • scissors
  • a pencil

Mason Jar Crafts and More from One Good Thing by Jillee mason jar dispenser

Start by opening up the top to create a flat surface.

Using the jar ring as a guide, trace a circle around the juice carton opening.

Cut out the circle.

Press into the inside of the mason jar ring.

Screw on top of a mason jar.

That’s it!  You just made yourself a VERY useful little dispenser great for holding all sorts of pourable contents.

I use mine to hold baking soda to tackle those seemingly ENDLESS tasks around the house that baking soda is good for.

Like scrubbing your grimy cookies sheets…………

Make Your Own Dishwasher Detergent Tabs by One Good Thing By Jillee

It’s been a long time since I have addressed the subject of Homemade Dishwasher Detergent. I guess I felt like I’d said all there was to say on the subject. I have posted about my original Homemade Dishwasher Detergent, and my Revised Homemade Dishwasher Detergent, and my Homemade Dishwasher Soap (Not Detergent).

But yesterday I got a comment from a reader named Heather on Facebook who had made my Homemade Dishwasher Detergent and while she loved the way it worked, her user experience was less than ideal.

This is how she (hilariously!) described it….

Jillee!!! Simply awesome! My dishes were DIRTY and CAKED with food. This homemade detergent is fantastic! Everything looks gorgeous! One thing… The mixture in my container is already semi-solid. I had to knife it “psycho” style to be able to get my tablespoon filled. Still works great, but I was surprised by how easily it bonded!
Thank you! Thank you for the work you do!!!!

You are SO welcome Heather! And I owe you a Thank You right back because your comment inspired me to try something new that I’m pretty jazzed about! Homemade Dishwasher Tablets!

A couple of months ago I talked about some issues I’d been having with itchy skin in this post on 21 Home Remedies For Dry, Itchy Skin. While I’ve had some ups and downs since then…I still haven’t been able to completely resolve it. This week has been particularly trying. I have tried every homeopathic and traditional medical remedy I (or my doctor) can think of to cure the itching, and still the problem persists. Which leaves me facing the fact that it’s being caused by what I have feared all along: S T R E S S.

Since we are smack dab in the middle of flu season…I think we are all more mindful of how important it is to wash our hands….OFTEN! I personally love my homemade foaming hand soap I keep at the sink, and use it OFTEN. But soap and water hand washing isn’t always possible. In those circumstances, a hand sanitizer is a good alternative.

If you’re like me, you are constantly buying those little bottles at the checkout stand at the grocery store and tucking them in your purse. But since they are so small and don’t last long….you are also constantly throwing the plastic bottle away and buying another one.

This is where the homemade version makes so much sense. You control the ingredients AND the plastic that you throw away.

Pie in the Sky – Heavenly Lemon Meringue

~:: Flour Arrangements ::~

During a recent kids’ soccer game, my friend Laurie mentioned that she was making a lemon meringue pie for a catering event that evening.   Instantly, I began obsessing as I described to her an amazing version that I hadn’t made in years.  I vaguely recalled it as a somewhat unconventional recipe;  one that used brown sugar rather than white and involved heating the egg white mixture before spreading it onto the pie.

What I remembered distinctly was how impressive the pie looked — something about precooking the egg and sugar allows you to get some serious height on the meringue.  And as far as taste,  I’m pretty sure I always licked the filling bowl whenever I made it.

At the end of the soccer game, Laurie left the field to go bake her pie;  I left on a mission to track down my coveted recipe with the hope of making it again as soon as I possibly could.

Butternut Squash Crostini

~:: Home Skillet Cooking ::~

The poor appetizers. Everyone fawns over the roasted turkey and the mashed potatoes and the gravy… and the parker house rolls… and the cranberry sauce… and the pumpkin pies. There isn’t a lot of love given to the starters and appetizers though, our dear friends that keep our appetites at bay while the rest of the Thanksgiving meal comes together. So, we put together these crostini to nibble on while we make the feast. We topped our toasts with butternut squash puree, sliced carrots, arugula, toasted walnuts, chopped rosemary, and a brush of maple syrup and orange juice. Yay for appetizers!

ABOUT SETH AND JENN: When not animating computer generated characters, or playing video games, Seth can be found obsessing over food.  When Jenn is not chasing around our toddler, or reading, she too can be found obsessing over food (and chapstick).  Over the last few years, our joint passion for food has taken on a life of its own and manifested itself as the blog, Home Skillet. We have no culinary training, but we spend most of our free time reading cookbooks and magazines and experimenting in the kitchen.  Seth works as a character animator in the video games industry, while Jenn has a master’s degree in Science and Technology Studies, and is now a stay-at-home mom to a toddler and two cats.

As I sit at my desk in my home office with it’s freshly-painted butter yellow walls, and stare out the window as the first snowfall of the season blankets my front yard…my heart is literally full to almost bursting. As I type this I am listening to some beautiful classical music, with warm slippers on my feet and my favorite cardigan wrapped around me. The central heating is chugging away keeping me warm and I just had a delicious lunch of homemade butternut squash soup. For some reason this morning I am keenly aware of how incredibly blessed I am. More than I can even wrap my head around and certainly more than I deserve! In the back of my mind there is a small place that reminds me that things could have turned out SO differently just a few short years ago when my life was far from this idyllic place I am sitting in right now…both physically and spiritually. But I am grateful for that as well, because I don’t want to forget to ALWAYS be grateful for where I am now.

While I don’t want this to be a “true confessions” sort of article, I feel I have to share a little bit of background for you to be able to understand better where my thoughts and feelings on GRATITUDE come from. They come from having enjoyed a blissfully uneventful upbringing in a loving family; a successful and fulfilling career as a broadcast journalist; and a continuing career as a wife and mother that I found equally fulfilling (and hopefully successful!)  But as we all know, into every life some rain must fall. My life up until I turned 40 years old had really only had a few sprinkles. But for a long, complicated list of reasons (that I still find myself trying to sort out to this day) I decided that the life I had created for myself up to that point was not the one I wanted. I wanted a different life. One where I was “free” to do what I wanted, one that didn’t “force” me to conform to any one way of living and didn’t “require” me to make so many “sacrifices”. You’ll notice I used quotation marks around – free, force, require, and sacrifices. That is because as I type those words today, they have a whole new meaning for me than they did back then.

This newly discovered “freedom” that I decided I wanted began innocently enough…a few parties….a few drinks…a new crowd to hang out with. It wasn’t hard to find that “excitement” I thought I was looking for. I traveled, I shopped, I drank, I disappeared. Soon, what began innocently enough began to turn on me. Or, more accurately, the consequences of my choices were beginning to emerge. Little things that then turned into bigger things. The fantasy life I was trying so hard to create was quickly beginning to unravel, and instead of facing the situation head on and straightening it out…I started a vicious cycle of denial and dismissal. It’s easier to cope with bad decisions when you just don’t face them. Or worse, when you start using substances to help you avoid reality. Those “few drinks” turned into lots of drinks, which meant more going out and more parties and more bad decisions. It saddens me to say that once I started down this destructive path it actually took several really awful experiences to finally jar me into some sense of reality. Ironically enough it was this very time of year…just before Thanksgiving that my world came crashing in on me, but which ultimately led to saving my life. So it’s not surprising I guess that at this time of year when we are “giving thanks” I am so very aware of how much I have to be grateful for.

After one particularly harrowing experience that shook me to my very core…that little voice inside of me that I had been trying so hard to drown out with alcohol and lies began to pierce me with its’ crystal clear message…Stop. No matter what you’ve done, no matter how far from grace you feel you have fallen, your children need you. You’re the only mother that they have. You need to save yourself so you can save them. YOUR CHILDREN NEED YOU. No other four words in the English language, or any other language for that matter, could have even touched me at that point…but those did. Those four unspoken but poignant words came to me from a “spirit” that I believe lives in every single one of us. The life force that we are endowed with by the mere fact that we are all human beings and that urges us to not only survive…but to LIVE.

Those four powerful words became my anthem and my life preserver. I hung on to them for dear life and they helped me to make the tough choices that lay ahead. And they were tough. On the 5th of December of that year I entered into residential treatment for substance abuse and didn’t emerge until my birthday on February 20th…72 days later. It was a long, painful, hard-fought battle, but thanks to an incredible group of counselors and the unfailing love of family and friends, I survived the battle and won the war with my demons. That was 4 years ago and what has happened in my life since then has been nothing short of a miracle.

After all the heartache and after all the darkness…slowly I began to rediscover my good life. All those things I had taken for granted and eventually began to resent…I now saw in a completely different light. I was looking at life through a new prism of GRATITUDE. Gratitude for what I still had after the storm that had just blown through my life…and gratitude for the things I had learned along the way. To this day I do believe that everything I went through had a purpose and that I am living that purpose.

One of the most important things I learned while in treatment was that I needed to find my passion in order to keep myself from going to “dark places” again. Advice that I in turn pass on to you. I fervently believe that when we find and actively pursue our true passion in life…we can accomplish great things and make the world a better place as we share it with others. A year and a half ago I started a little blog called “One Good Thing By Jillee“. I was “passionate” about finding and sharing things that I thought made life easier, more affordable, and more beautiful overall! Little did I know the effect it would have and the places it would take me. I went from my Mom and Dad as my only readers to more than 7 million page views a month in one year! It has been an incredible journey that continues to take me to places I never even dreamed of. But the success and prestige PALE in comparison to the satisfaction I get from hearing from people from all around the world who have learned something new from my blog that has helped them and their family in some real and measurable way. Those are the things that bring me the greatest joy and inspire me to keep pursuing my passion.

I would like to thank Bonbon Break for the opportunity to share some of my story with you. I didn’t think it was possible, but I have felt even MORE gratitude as I have taken time to write about and reflect on my life’s journey thus far. I hope you will take some time this holiday season to do some reflecting on your own journey and, if you haven’t done so already, find that passion that you have inside you and begin sharing it with the rest of us. The world needs it.

Blessings,

Jillee

CALL ME HAWKEYE – REFRIGERATOR PICKLES ::: Use Real Butter

Refrigerator pickles are an easy, quick, and delightful way to put a dent in your bounty of cucumbers this summer. This recipe is vinegary, slightly sweet, slightly spicy, and a little bit dilly, but it’s flexible enough for you to make it your own by omitting or adding ingredients of your choosing. Just one bit of advice: consider making a double batch. We tore through the first batch in no time flat. They are THAT good.

HOW MANY CUPS IN A PINT? A QUART? A GALLON? HANG THIS UP IN YOUR KITCHEN AND NEVER WONDER AGAIN! ::: One Good Thing by Jillee

I saw this on Pinterest recently. It’s from a website called Beyond The Grades. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that’s where this comes from….because it’s a THIRD GRADE teacher’s website. lol. Nothing against Mrs. Rivera. Her website is amazing! I just have to laugh at the fact that this is 3rd grade stuff that I find so amazing. 🙂 I apparently didn’t pay too close attention in 3rd grade.

So here is the 411 on how to remember how many cups are in a gallon, etc.

There are 2 Cups in a Pint
There are 2 Pints in a Quart
There are 4 Quarts in a Gallon

Two “C’s” fit inside a “P,” two “P’s” fit inside a “Q,” and four “Q’s” fit inside a “G.” Brilliant!

PENCIL PUSH UP POPS ::: Bakerella

Pencil Push Up PopsSchool starts back this week for my nieces which seems super early. I mean I’m just now getting used to it being summer, and haven’t even taken any time off yet.

And now it’s the season’s signal that summer is almost over. Bummer.

But I thought I would make some cheerful Back to School sweets for the occasion. And also because for some strange reason I can’t get the song Back to School Again from Grease 2 out of my head. Maybe I shouldn’t admit that. I’m probably one of the few that’s seen the movie more than once. On purpose. I especially like when Michelle Pfeiffer sings Cool Rider. Cooo-ooo-ooo-ool Rider. Raise your hand if you like it, too. How many of you hear crickets right now and have no idea what I’m talking about. That’s okay. I’ll stop and talk about cake.

BROWNIE TIRAMISU ::: That Skinny Chick Can Bake

After tasting an outrageously delicious apple tiramisu spiked with Calvados in Normandy this summer, I started brainstorming about other ways to make tiramisu. My oldest adores the classic version, but hubby is not a fan of a strong coffee flavor in his desserts nor lady fingers. No wonder he’s never been enamored with this dessert.

Instead of ladyfingers, I decided to make a Kahula soaked brownie, then top with a layer of sweetened mascarpone mixed with slosh of kahlua and whipped cream, hoping the coffee flavor would be subtle enough for Mr. Picky’s palate. A dusting of chocolate wafer crumbs would complete this tiramisu.I worried a bit when hubby sampled some of the leftover brownie crumbs doused with Kahlua…he griped about the obvious coffee flavor. But when the dessert was layered and chilled, there was nary a complaint.

ROAD TRIP LUNCHES ::: BentOn Better Lunches

It’s summertime! I don’t need to pack a lunch! Well, not a school lunch anyways… there are still day camps, trips to the park, picnics on the beach… and family vacations, which means… road trips!

Eating in the car is not something I usually allow, but I make an exception on long road trips. It’s harder to find healthy eating options along the highway than it is to vacuum the crumbs from the van, and stopping for lunch makes the trip longer too. Instead, I pack snack-type things we can graze on throughout the trip. Munching seems to help with boredom too.

5 things I keep in mind when choosing food to pack for a road trip…

EARL GREY TART WITH BERRIES::: Flour Arrangements

I managed to get all the way through college without acquiring a coffee habit.
As a child, when I begged my coffee-chugging mom for sips of her coveted brew, she told me in a horrified tones how drinking coffee  would stunt my growth.  Clearly this made an impression on me (she barely clears 5 feet, so I figured she knew what she was talking about).  Now that I’m a mom, I realize she probably had her hands full without having one of her three kids amped up on caffeine.

SLICED BEEF YAKITORI ::: Home Skillet Cooking

Plunging a stick in food was a genius idea – I sincerely wish we could thank the person who originally thought of doing that. Think about hard candy. If someone was like ohh, here have some candy and they handed you hard candy you would be like um thanks? But get a stick in that hard candy and it becomes fun! You would totally be happy if someone gave you a lollipop. Take a corn dog… If possible, Seth would probably divorce me and marry the person who came up with that. Take the stick out of the cornbread encrusted hotdog, and he would be like ehhh, ok. But once that stick is there it is all like, ohh my god must have it. Here, we take fresh beef flap meat, marinate it in a homemade teriyaki sauce, skewer it, then grill it over high heat, brushing it with a thickened version of the marinade. Like eating a popsicle, but all meaty and umami. And you know, grilled. And not frozen. Actually the opposite.

10 HOMEMADE CLEANERS MADE FROM CITRUS :::                                   One Good Thing by Jillee

BlogHer '12
Last week I wrote about making your own Citrus Enzyme Cleaner, which got me thinking about how the whole idea of cleaning with citrus just makes so much sense to me (not to mention that I LOVE the smell, taste, and just about EVERYTHING else related to citrus!)

I mean why pay ridiculous amounts of money for harsh commercial cleansers when you can create your own INEXPENSIVE and EFFECTIVE versions using citrus peels? What makes them so effective? Citrus peels contain oil called D-limonene which is a powerful solvent for dirt and especially grease.

And as a bonus…citrus cleaners leave your home SMELLING fresh and clean!
