With winter going full speed and freezing temperatures showing up all over the map, it is hard to do outside activities. With this activity, you get to make something to place outside and watch through the window from where it’s nice and warm. This bird seed dough is so much fun to make, and since it is peanut butter free, it makes it safe for everyone!

Bird Seed Dough Bird Feeders by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

What you will need:

  • 1/3 Cup of Flour
  • 1/4 Cup of Water
  • 1 packet of Gelatin
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons of Corn Syrup
  • 2 Cups of Bird Seed

Supplies:

  • Drinking Straw
  • Cookie cutters
  • Mixing bowl and Spoon
  • Mat or Foil to put your seed on
  • Cookie sheet (optional)

Bird Seed Dough Bird Feeders by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

How to make your own birdseed dough:

1. Put 2 cups of bird seed in a bowl

2. Add 1/3 Cup of flour

3. Next put in 1 1/2 Tablespoons of corn syrup

4. Then add 1 pouch of gelatin

5. Last add your 1/4 of water

Now mix well until all your ingredients are incorporated nicely and it looks something like this:Bird Seed Dough Bird Feeders by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

Tip: Your mixture will be a bit sticky, but that’s okay!

Now the fun part!

Bird Seed Dough Bird Feeders by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

The next step is to pat out your dough, this dough is too sticky to roll. Grab a mat or some foil and lay it on the table with a bit of cooking spray or oil on it to keep it from sticking. Once it’s on the mat, you can pat it out flat with your hands until it is about 1/2 inch thick.

Next, use your cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the dough. While your seed dough is still in the cookie cutter, slide it off the mat and onto a baking sheet.  Just press you dough back together so you can cut more.

This recipe makes about 12-15 bird seed feeders.

Bird Seed Dough Bird Feeders by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

Before you bake the feeders, use a drinking straw to make a hole in each one so you can hang them when they cool.

Now its time to bake them! Put them in the oven at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes (it depends on how big and thick yours turn out). You will know they are done when they are hard.

Tip: You can let the bird feeders air dry, but you need to let them sit over night until they are hard. (This can be a long wait for little ones.)

When your feeders are completely cooled (about 30 minutes), you can tie string to them so you can hang them in the trees for the birds to eat!

Now you’re ready to hang! We hung some right outside the window so that we could watch the birds enjoy their new treats.

This is such an easy project to do with your little ones, it only takes two ingredients! This Snow dough is super easy to make and since you don’t use a stove to make it, your little ones can have fun mixing it up. You play with it just like playdough but it is so much softer and smells great. too!

TIP: You can add glitter to make it sparkle like snow, or if you want fun colors just add a little food coloring

Snow Dough Recipe

Snow Dough by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

To make this snow dough you will need to add 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part conditioner. ( I did 2 cups cornstarch to 1 cup conditioner)

1. Add two parts cornstarch to a bowl

2. Add 1 part of the hair conditioner to the cornstarch

3. Mix the two ingredients together until they are incorporated well

4. The fun part! Use your hands to form the mixture into a dough. If your dough is a little sticky just add more cornstarch.

TIP: All conditioners are different consistency so you might have to add a bit more cornstarch, only if your dough is a little sticky.

Now have fun! We put out cookie cutters and rolled balls to make snowmen, and spent lots of time smelling a squishing our soft dough.  It is such an easy dough to make and it makes hours of fun play.

To store your Snow Dough just place in an airtight container or a zip lock bag.

Enjoy!

With Martin Luther King Jr. Day coming right up, it can be tricky to explain the meaning behind MLK Day to your little ones. Talking about diversity can be a good way to approach the topic for younger kids.  What better way to talk about diversity than with play dough! It is something all kids can identify with, and it provides a great way for them to learn though play.

Playdough Recipe

Talking about Diversity with Children Using Playdough by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

  • 3 Cups Flour
  • 3/4 Cup Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar (you can find this cheapest in the bulk spices)
  • 3 Tablespoons of Oil
  • 3 Cups water

1) Start by mixing your flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water in a medium saucepan.

2) Whisk your ingredients together until your mixture is smooth and clump free.

4) Cook your playdough in the saucepan over medium heat, mixing constantly with a wooden spoon or a spatula.

5) Mix until it takes on a dough-like consistency.

5) When it looks done remove from the pan on to your counter top and let cool until its easy to handle.

6) When it is cool enough to work with knead your playdough for an extra smooth consistency.

7) Let your playdough cool completely before children handle it and before you add in your colors.

What I did:

I decided to make to rainbow of colored playdough (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) all colors that they would know. We started with plain white playdough and talked about what it looked like, how it felt, smelled, etc. (see above for the playdough recipe)

Tip: For extra sensory for younger kids you can add a scent to you playdough (ex. peppermint) and/or a texture (ex. cornmeal) to help grasp that it smells and feels the same.

Talking about Diversity with Children Using Playdough by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

Then we divided it into 6 sections, to each section I added a color of the rainbow to it and we mixed it in and watched that playdough take on that color. We did this until all 6 sections were a different color.

Next we talked about the playdough again. We discussed that even though they were now different colors, were they any different? Nope, it was still playdough and it still looked, felt, and smelled the same.

We went even further now mixing our colored playdoughs together, getting even more colors. Did this change it? Nope! It was still the same playdough just a different color.

Then we talked about how people can be like playdough. How everyone is different but we are all still people and were all still made up the same even if our color is different from someone else.

Just like the playdough, our skin color can be different, but what we are made of is all the same.

Working with younger children, I have learned that some topics can be tricky to discuss or explain. With the help and visual of the playdough,  younger kids can really get and idea of the word “diversity” and we can all look different but, on the inside, we are all made up of the same ingredients.

Enjoy!

Growing up, our household celebrated every holiday. With Valentine’s Day also being my mother’s birthday, it was always a special day. Her love of celebrating holidays made it more memorable.

We would wake up in the morning to heart-shaped pancakes, and she would leave us little treats with a homemade valentine. I agree that we should share our love everyday, but there is still something unique and worth celebrating on Valentine’s Day.

This year, I thought it would be fun to celebrate our love every day of February leading up to the big day.  I decided to make a Valentine’s countdown calendar.

Each day has a little note that shares something special to do with your child that day.

What you will need:

  • Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Tape
  • Pen

To start, I decided to make little envelopes that would hold the little notes for each day.

VD1

1. Start with 14 pieces of construction paper (mine was 8 1/2  by 11 inches). To make your envelopes square, you will need to cut them so they are 5 1/2 by 11 inches. Just trim 2 1/2 inches off one side of your paper.

2. Once they are all cut, fold each one in half.

2. To seal the sides of your envelope, leave the top open, and fold the sides over about 1/4 an inch on each side.

4. To keep them closed, use tape in each corner.

Tip: If you don’t want to make your own envelopes, you can always use store bought ones, too!

Now to make them look cute!

VD3

Next, I added numbers to my envelopes. I used my Silhouette machine. You can use stickers, or just write the numbers on each envelope!

VD4

Now for the notes:

I cut pieces of white paper to fit inside my envelops. The papers ended up measuring 5 1/2 by 5 inches. Then I used my Silhouette to decorate my notes a little bit. You can just leave your white or add anything you would like to them.

Next I make a list from 1-14 of thing that I would like to put in the envolopes as something that would be special to do. Here are a few ideas:

  • Pink Bubble Bath – just add a little food coloring to make your bath water pink!
  • Make cookies
  • Cut out Hearts
  • Decorate the house for Valentine’s day
  • Go to the park ticket – give to mom or dad to schedule a trip to the park this week.
  • Make a blanket fort
  • Movie and popcorn night
  • Send a Valentine to someone (using snail mail)
  • Decorate Valentine’s

Have fun coming up with ideas that will be special for you and your little ones to do!

Here is what my finished notes looked liked:

VD5

Now that everything is ready to go its time to hang them on the wall. I started by filling each of my envelopes with a note then I just used double stick tape and taped them on to the wall. I also made a little count down sign to hang above it.

Here is what my finished countdown calendar looks like:

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

Growing up,  I loved when my mom would buy us an advent calendar.   We loved flipping up the little  flaps with pictures hidden behind them or sometimes, chocolate. Now that I have my own home and have started my own traditions, I wanted to make an advent calendar for our home that everyone could use and see as we count down the days to Christmas this year.

Finding. Tracing. Cutting. Re-cutting. Trimming.

Not this year. This year I had a little help from the Silhouette Cameo. What is it?  A machine that can cut out just about any design! It cuts paper, card stock, vinyl, and fabric just to name a few. All you do is open the program, design what you want to cut using their easy-to-use studio, then let the machine go to work. It does all of the cutting for you!

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

For those of you who don’t have a Silhouette, read on because there are tips on different ways you can make the numbers for your Advent Calendar.

Brown Bag Advent Calendar

Quick and easy to make, you can design a creative Advent Calendar with items you already have around your house.

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBavent

What you will need:

* 25 Brown paper bags 25 Christmas ornaments

* Numbers 1-25 ( you can cut them out using a Silhouette Cameo,  buy number stickers, stencil them, or write your own.)

* Glue Clothes Pins Twine (you can use twine, yarn, ribbon, etc.)

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

Directions:

1) Get your numbers 1-25 ready. I cut mine out on the Silhouette using the scallop border and then adding numbers to the middle of each one using the font Stencil. I simply used white paper that I had laying around and cut away.

Tip: If you don’t have a Silhouette, no worries. You can cut out your own, print numbers, draw then on, stencil them on, or buy number stickers.

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBavent

2) I decided that I wanted my bags to be a little bit smaller so they wouldn’t take up so much space on the wall. A fold at the top of the bag was all it took. Fold about 1/3 the way down, so that the top of the bag just about touches the bottom fold. (see picture above) Now that your bags and your numbers are all ready, it’s time to glue!

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

3) Add a little glue to the back of each number and press them into the center of each folded bag until all 1 though 24 were done.

For 25, I wanted to add a little extra to make it stand out. The perfect accent was a little tree I made using the Silhouette. (You could use stickers, glitter, stencil, print out, etc.)

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

Now it’s time to fill your bags.

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

4) I filled my bags with ornaments so we can open a bag and add an ornament to our Christmas tree every single day. You can fill them with anything you like: treats, little toys, messages. The ideas are infinite. Collect 25 items and put one into each bag. Once the bag has an ornament in it, use the clothes pin to clip it shut.

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

Now is the fun part, time to hang them on your wall and enjoy.

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

5) Hang the first line where you want your calendar to start. I hung 5 bags on each line, so I was going to need five lines total. Place a tack on each side of the wall and tie the line to each tack. Make sure your line is tight because the weight of the bags will make it sag. Place all of your bags, 5 per row, along the lines.

Advent Calendar by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break #BBadvent

There you have it! Your very own DIY Advent Calendar for you and your family.

Beginning on December 1, have fun opening a bag each day! Enjoy your calendar and the joy that it will bring to your family and add to your children’s Christmas memories.

With the cold weather setting in and more hours been spent indoors, this is a fun way to bring an outdoor concept in. Let your kids have fun driving trucks through their playdough dirt, making animals tracks, or building fences with popsicle sticks. The options are endless and it smells good too!

Playdough Recipe:

2 Cups Flour

1/2 Cup Salt

2 Tablespoons Cream of Tartar (you can find this cheapest in the bulk spices)

2 Tablespoons of Oil

2 Cups water

Red and Green food coloring (or brown if you have it )

2 Tablespoons of Coffee grounds – This will make your playdough gritty and dirt like.

Peppermint extract (optional)

1) Start by mixing your flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water in a medium saucepan. Whisk your ingredients together until your mixture is smooth and clump free.

2) Add your food coloring. To make brown just add equal amounts of red and green food coloring until you get the color you like ( just know that once your playdough is cooked the color will darken, so don’t worry about getting it too dark)

3) Add your coffee grounds and your extract.

4) Cook your playdough in the saucepan over medium heat mixing constantly with a wooden spoon or a spatula. Mix until it takes on a dough-like consistency.

5) When it looks done remove from the pan on to your counter top and let cool until its easy to handle.

6) When it is cool enough to work with knead your playdough for an extra smooth consistency.

Tree of Gratitude by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

With Thanksgiving coming up quickly, it is time to think about the holiday and what it means to your family. This post will give you a tutorial on how to make your own tree of gratitude full of all the things you and  your family are grateful for in life. This is a fun project to do with the whole family and a project that grows throughout the entire month.

What you will need:

  • Craft Paper
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Vase or Jar
  • Branches
  • Pens or Markers
  • Bowl or Basket

To start, I found an old jar (you could use a big mason jar or vase.) You can decorate your jar or leave it just the way it is. Fill the bottom with marbles or stones to counterbalance the decorations. Next, you will need to fill it with branches. I went outside and cut a few, but you can put as many as you would like in your jar to make your tree. After you get the branches settled, you will need some leaves to hang from them. I chose some fall colors (red, orange, yellow, and green) of construction paper to cut my leaves from. You can either use an online template to cut your leaves or have fun making your own.

Tip: Let your little ones draw leaves for you to cut or, if they are old enough, they can cut out their own. Once all of your leaves are cut out, you will want to punch a hole in each of them.Tree of Gratitude by Katie Myers of Bonbon BreakBe sure to put your leaves in a basket or bowl of some sort and leave either a pen or marker out for family members to write what they are thankful for on the leaves. Now that your tree is ready to go,  its time for your tree to grow.

The idea is that every night at dinner for the month of November, leading up to Thanksgiving, each family member will write something that are thankful for on a leaf and hang it on the tree. This can be a good dinner topic and something to talk to your children about and help them think up ideas that they can put on their leaves. Let your children write their idea or if they are too young you can write it for them.

Hang your leaves on your tree each night and when Thanksgiving comes around you can take them all down and share them at your meal.

Have fun listening to what everyone is grateful for and reflecting on what means the most to you and your family.

Halloween Handprints by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

With Halloween right around the corner, here are some fun Halloween handprint ideas to do with your kids. Below are pictures of handprints with a Halloween theme. With a few,  I have added an extra element in case you are doing the project with older children who might want to do a little more then a handprint.

Halloween Handprints by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

For this fun little pumpkin, all you need is two little hands, a piece of paper, some orange paint, and markers.

Start by covering one hand with orange paint and making a print on your paper. Next, paint the other hand to make the other side of the pumpkin. When making your second print make sure your fingers cross a little bit. After it dries, add a little stem and a cute jack-o-lantern face.

Tip: For older children you can cut out the face pieces from black construction paper and have your child glue on their own jack-o-lantern face.

Frankenstein Hand print - Halloween Handprints by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

For this funny Frankenstein you will need just one little hand, green and black paint, and a black maker.

Start by painting the palm of the hand green. Next, paint the fingers and the top of the palm with the black paint to make Frankenstein’s hair.  When your hand is all painted make a print on your paper and wait until its dry. When dry, add a funny face, some stitches, and, of course, bolts.

Spider Hand Print BBB

This cute little spider is a two part project (if you want it to be.) You can either do just the spider print on a piece of paper, but if you need a little extra, the marble painted spider web is lots of fun.

Here is how we did it.

For the marble painted spider web:

What you will need: marbles, white paint, bowl, spoon, water, flat box or pan, paper

Start by putting some white paint in a bowl, add a little water and stir. The water will help thin out the paint a little so the marbles can move more freely. When your paint is mixed add in your marbles, using your spoon move them around until they are coated.

Next ,have a pan or flat box ready with a piece of construction paper in it. Plop your marbles on top of the paper. Have your child grab each side of the box or pan and tilt it back and forth, side to side. A fun web design will appear. When you child is done, remove the paper and allow to dry before adding your spider handprint.

For the Spider Handprint.

All you will need is your piece of paper (marble painted or not) two little hands, black paint, and white paint for the face.

Start by painting one hand, minus the thumb, black and making a print on the paper, next paint the other hand. When making the second print make sure that the bottom of the palms of the hand are touching to make the spiders body.

Let your little spider dry, when it’s done, you can paint on a cute little face.

Tip: For older kids you could also have googlie eyes they can glue on themselves. You can talk about spiders and how they have eight eyes, count out eight and have fun gluing.

Ghost handprint - Halloween Handprints by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

For this spooky ghost all you will need is: one little hand, a piece of paper, white paint, and a black marker.

To make the ghost, paint the hand white, making sure to skip the thumb, just painting the palm and fingers. Once your little ghost is dry, have fun making a spooky ghost face with black maker.

Black Cat handprint - Halloween Handprints by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

For this cute black cat all you will need is: one little hand, a piece of paper, black paint, and white paint to make the cat’s face.

To make the cat, paint the hole hand black and make a print on your paper. When dry, the thumb will be the cat’s tail. You will need to add a head on the other side of the hand. I outlined it first, then painted it in. When your head is dry use the white paint and a small brush to make a cute little face.

Tip: A way to make this craft a little more fun for older kids, pull out the craft sticks. Have fun making a fence for your cat to walk on by making a fence out of craft sticks and glue.

———————————————————————————

Bat handprint - Halloween Handprints by Katie Myers of Bonbon Break

For this bat all you will need is: two little hands, paint (any color, she wanted purple), and a marker.

To make the bat, start by painting one hand and make a print. When printing the second hand make sure the thumbs are down, these are the bottoms of the wings, and then have the bottom of each palm touch. Let your little bat dry. When it’s dry, add a head and bottom. Again, I started by outlining the bat body and then filled it in with paint. When the body is dry you can outline the wings with the marker and add a little face.

I hope you and your little ones have as much fun doing these Halloween hand prints as little Lou and I did.

Just remember to have fun with it!
