Creativity, as well as technical ability, are so critical. As a former teacher, I know that there is only so much time in the day for developing skills and habits in kids that they’ll need today and later on. Visual skills — like handwriting — does teach habits of mind, such as concentration and persistence, that can be so valuable. I’ve been in schools in which I’ve argued for keeping handwriting in the curriculum. But unfortunately every year brings new skills, new tests that must be addressed. And writing is one of those things that gets pushed out.
