Sadness doesn’t have to mean we can’t be happy too – they are both just a part of being human. And I think you are onto something. If we can cultivate happiness through gratitude (the two definitely go hand in hand), then we have something to carry us through the sad times.

I embrace my sadness, and I think the tendency is to tell someone who is blue to “cheer up!” I’d rather absorb it, work through it, and find my way, in my own time, to a happier state.
