Yes, yes, and yes. When my kids ask or see, I answer honestly. If we watch a new TV show together and I find the language or topic or the fact they they portray the parents at such fools it in insulting, I explain this to them, show them them exactly what I mean, and then move onto better things.

I watched a lot of people in my inner circle make bad decisions, as a kid, and it helped me NOT make those same bad decisions. I didn’t get sheltered from anything, and it actually worked to keep me in line.

Then, again, I was also told “No” and knew where the lines were that I’d be in BIG trouble if I ever crossed them.

An awareness of the good AND the bad is a very good thing. Thank you for pointing this out so eloquently.

Michelle, thank you for writing this. I have often wanted there to be a news station that only shared good news. I bet it would be a number one show! It’s a sad commentary on our society when we’re more interested in the scandalous and tearing someone down than in the heartwarming stories of building people up.

You echo much of my same thoughts. My boys are too young to care about the VMAs… and we don’t have TV anyway…
Of course, I watched the performance online after the Internet freaked out about it. I’ll just go ahead and say “ditto”… to everything you said.

I agree with you 100%

I did not watch the VMAs. Perhaps I’m getting too old. I did watch a clip of the video (how could you avoid it) and what I really felt was sorry for MIley. It was a pretty sad display, and she has such a great voice. Yes, she has to grow up, but this was more bizarre and posturing, and I agree, she’s getting some bad advice, somewhere.

What an absolutely amazing essay! You are dead on about so very many things. The good, the bad, and the ugly are all part of the world and life. I never sheltered my offspring. Like you, I watched and discussed with them. Some things I wish I HADN’T had to explain (“Mom, what’s a blow…”) but it was better they knew the facts than half truths heard in the locker room. (Again, some things I REALLY wish I hadn’t had tot explain…)
The world would be an immensely better place if everyone followed your lead and the front pages and lead stories ended up being legitimate new, instead of the yellow journalism that it’s become.
