Omg u have 3 minutes before u have to leave for the bus why are you just sitting there!??! Is usually the normal phrase. Next the forgotten paper or homework/project. The bliss of realizing that my child can indeed deal with a big fat F once in a while for failing to make sure the work was done or I was alerted to any and all necessary projects. My husband and I both work full time jobs plus I have a party me weekend one. I love I'm not the only one that says "tough" when the situation warrants it.

What a wonderful post, Melissa! Your #5 made me get all crinkly-eyed. I have three girls, and last night I was just thinking morosely about my youngest entering full-day 1st grade (as opposed to half-day kindergarten last year) this fall. Of course I don't have the energy to do everything with that first-time vigor the way I did with her oldest sister. And of course I still owe her a hand-drawn All About Me book that both her older sisters already have. But I tell myself that she is the benefactor of two rounds of Earlier Experiments, so that by now, with her, I get to be less panicky, less confused, less inefficient, less bumbling, less distracted. And, therefore, more in the moment (one hopes).

P.S. Funny – I just told the husband that I'm not letting myself insanely-volunteer in school, either. And that he should kick me if I change my mind. I'm a better mom when I'm not stretched thin, and everyone knows it (except me, often).
