I've actually considered going around the neighborhood with a flyer with our info on it, knocking on doors, and seeing who has kids. But I'm a little chicken because I actually can't stand other people's children for the most part.

I can totally appreciate that it is harder when you work outside of the home. In fact, that is one of the challenges we are running into since we moved – a lot of the kids are home with sitters, so we have to wait for the weekend or evening for the kids to socialize because it wouldn’t be fair to impose an extra child on someone’s sitter.

I think getting to know neighbors takes time. Are people out if you go for a walk in the evening? You could stop and say hi and introduce yourself. I always feel self-conscious doing this, but it does work!

Or what about hosting a family-friendly happy hour on a Friday evening? I heard about one neighborhood that did this regularly and it became something people really looked forward to. In our new neighborhood one family organizes events from time-to-time, like a Last Day of School Tie-Dye Party for the kids and a Cinco de Mayo cookout for families. They put flyers on everyone’s door step, which is a good way to let people know about it. It does mean hosting, but might be worth it if it starts creating connections. 🙂

I also did a “neighborhood playdate” on a Saturday in our old neighborhood. I stuck flyers in everyone’s mailboxes and invited them to come from 10-noon for muffins, juice, and playing outside. The turnout was small, but it was still fun! As people got to know one another better, we connected via FB which was also a surprisingly good way to build relationships. Just some ideas. Hope these are helpful. 🙂

I’m in the same boat. I don’t work outside the home, but I know almost none of my neighbors

This summer, at 6.5yo she is being allowed to roam our small neighborhood on her own. To make sure I can stay in touch with her, we got a set of two-way radios that have a long enough range to cover the entire neighborhood. She can ask questions if she wants permission to do something, I can check in if I haven't heard from her in awhile, and if I need her home I can tell her right away.

I feel bad that I don’t know our neighbors well enough to let them roam free. We have a perfect neighborhood for children, which is why we moved there, but I’ve never made the effort to actually get to know the other parents in the neighborhood. At this point I’m not even sure how to do that.
