BetsyBetsy’s Choice: Emilio Nares Foundation

I first learned of the Emilio Nares Foundation when I volunteered at a charity golf tournament that was raising funds on their behalf. Little did I know at the time, what an impact that day would have on me.

The Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF) was founded by Richard and Diane Nares after losing their only son, Emilio, to cancer shortly before his sixth birthday. ENF navigates families through their child’s journey with cancer and ensures no child misses a cancer treatment due to lack of transportation. ENF’s flagship program, Ride with Emilio, takes low-income, underprivileged families whose children have cancer and need transportation to and from their cancer treatment. ENF serves over 250 patients annually in San Diego and Orange County with plans to expand to provide transportation to other Children’s Hospitals.

What stuck with me from the golf tournament that day was actually meeting the children and families this program was helping. Cancer doesn’t only affect those who have a car to drive themselves to the hospital for treatment every week. Unfortunately, it sometimes affects those who use the bus or train as their primary form of transportation. Can you imagine having to take your cancer-stricken child on the bus for treatment each week? It’s actually more common than you think.

Getting a first person account of how this charity benefits the community was so much more meaningful to me then sending a check to someone. Beyond that, Richard and Diane were there. All the “head people” at ENF were there. This is not some fancy, faceless charity that hosts annual galas. These are people who turned their personal tragedy into something good that benefits the community that we are all sharing. The team from ENF is out there, working tirelessly to make real changes in the lives of real people. I’ve learned that the most worthy charities aren’t necessarily the ones with the most notoriety. Sometimes the smallest and simplest actions are the most valuable, and that’s exactly what ENF is all about.
