Backyard Nature Game: Snail Races by Go Explore Nature

The 2013 premiere of the children’s film “Turbo” might have put snails on the map, but would you ever consider hosting snail races? With real live snails? I’m here to tell you that if you’re looking for a simple, fun, entertaining backyard game for the kids, look no further. Snail racing is where it’s at.

Most kids are probably familiar with snails from playing in their own backyard or garden, especially after it rains or in moist areas. Not only is snail racing fun, it also gives kids a chance to get an up close view of these usually shy critters. While snails race, kids might discover the answers to a few questions, like: How do snails move? Where are their eyes? What makes that trail that follows behind them?

Although snail races are lots of fun with large groups, you can also enjoy them right in your own backyard. You’ll only need a few items – and some snails – to host your very own snail race. Grab a few kids, find a few snails (don’t forget to name them!), create a race track and you’re off to the races! Kids can cheer along as their snails make their way to the finish line.
