DESIGNING A CUTTING GARDEN :::  Donuts, Dresses and Dirt

I used to think that a cutting garden was a luxury, reserved solely for people with large properties and lots of room for multiple gardens (think “Martha”? I know I did!).

But since so many of my clients ask for gardens “with flowers for cutting”, I’ve come up with a few tricks for creating traditional front yard gardens that also serve as cutting beds – and you can too!

AUGUST HARVEST ::: Diary of a Tomato

Once a week I try to stop the momentum of life, take a look around and record what’s happening in our garden. I wasn’t always a gardener, but have always been a cook. That the two go hand in hand may seem obvious, but took me many years to discover. Now that I have, the garden has deepened my cooking immeasurably. This is what’s coming out of my garden and ending up in my kitchen in August.

WITH DADDY IN THE NEW FAMILY KAYAK ::: Hike. Blog. Love

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by the stress of every day family life that you had forgotten to take some time to breath? Our family had just gone through a rough year full of crazy schedules and huge sacrifices. The toll of overworked parents was beginning to be felt immensely by our youngest son. In an attempt to reclaim some sanity in our lives, we made several huge changes. We found that the path back to a peaceful and happy life, however, could happen one father-son fishing trip at a time.

About Lauren: I’m a lover of nature, an avid hiker, a former biochemist and a mama to two boys adopted from across the globe, one who happens to have significant special needs.

I use this blog to chronicle all of our adventures and to also connect with others in the adoption and special needs communities. I love to write and you can see all the other places I write for here. In my spare time I can be found teaching college chemistry and even sometimes never cleaning my house. At the end of the day, if the kids are happy and healthy, mama’s happy too.

On this blog you will see that we love to hike, camp, canoe, kayak, SCUBA dive, cave and explore new places. Most of all, we just love doing life together as a family.  Follow Lauren on FacebookTwitter and Pinterest.

DANGEROUS FOODS AND PLANTS FOR DOGS ::: Kitchen Counter Chronicles

Our puppy has arrived. His name is Arthur (Sir Arthur, for more formal occasions). He is an 8 week old Border Terrier. Which means he’s super cute and full of tons of energy. So far so good. We’re figuring out that he is a fabulous walker and walking is the key to getting all of his “silly” energy out. We have been working hard to get prepared for his arrival. It took some planning, some hard labour and some creativity. One area that we knew we had to do some research on was how to keep our new puppy safe. Danger doesn’t only come from moving vehicles and other animals…nope some of the most dangerous things for your puppy are in our kitchen and in the garden. Perfectly safe and lovely “people food” can make our dog quite sick, so we needed to compile a list.

About Jen:

Welcome! If you are at all like me then everything in your life lands on your kitchen counter!

My name is Jen and I’m a stay-at-home mom to 2 beautifully intelligent little girls. I’m married to a funny, supportive man, who I started dating when I was a teenager! I have decided to share my adventures in crafting, baking, gardening and greening our lives in this blog. We live in a fantastic neighbourhood, in Toronto, called the Beach. We love our city…spending time outdoors exploring and indoors using our imaginations.

I like to go inside the kitchen of other amazing woman in a feature I call Kitchen Counter Confidential. I like to see if the grass really is greener on the other side. What I learn…I share with you. Enjoy!
